On Friday, January 31, near a mosque in Kyiv, the Migration Service and police detained Muslims as part of a raid to identify illegal migrants.
The Kyiv Police said that jointly with the migration service employees they uncovered 15 foreign citizens who did not have documents confirming their legal stay on the territory of Ukraine.
The respective actions of the police and migration service caused a public response. Spiritual leader of Ukrainian Muslims Said Ismagilov called the action a shame and disgrace, and the leader of the Mejlis Refat Chubarov called it a blatant and massive violation of human rights.
The leader of the Majlis of the Crimean Tatar people, MP of the BPP Refat Chubarov called on everyone who prays on Saturday in synagogues and on Sunday in churches or prayer houses, to inform him about similar instances of humiliation.
“Muslim believers who performed the Friday prayer in the mosque of the Islamic cultural center "Alraid”, located in Kyiv at 25 Dehtyarivska street, faced a blatant and massive violation of human rights: on the way out of the courtyard of the mosque, they were waited for by the State Migration Service (in the photo they are clad in neon-green vests) and police officers who arrived on 2 buses, carrying special equipment and weapons,” Chubarov wrote.
"The migration service explained their stay near the mosque and the requirements for people who came out of the courtyard of the mosque to present identity documents with a raid to identify illegal migrants," he added.
