Metropolitan of UAOC Calls Believers to Revive Monastery of Uhornyky
The website of the Men’s Monastery Transfiguration of Uhornyky published an address of its archimandrite, the Head of Ivano-Frankivsk Eparchy of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC), Metropolitan Andrii of Halych to the believers of Subcarpathian region.
The address stresses that near the settlement of Otynia, between the villages of Uhornyky and Babianka in Kolomyia District, a men’s Monastery of Transfiguration of the Saviour once existed. It is mentioned in historic texts of the 16th century as “Uhornytskyi.” The monastery was closed down by the Austrian authorities in 1752. The church and monastery buildings have not been preserved.
Reverend Iov of Pochaiv began his monastic life in the monastery. Reverend Iov Knyhynytskyi (Maniavskyi) served as the Hegumen of the monastery for some time. Ivan Vyshenskyi also lived in the monastery.
“Revival of this shrine should become the concern of not only one village, district or eparchy, therefore, as we remember the good traditions of Ukrainian sponsors, patriots of our church and state, I am asking on behalf of the brethren of the monastery and personally for possible financial and material (technical or humanitarian) assistance. I address those who live not only for themselves but in whom Christ lives: contribute a modest gift according to your possibilities for the revival of the shrine,” called the metropolitan.
