Рушник_єдності.jpgA rushnyk, a traditional embroidered cloth, which monks from Donetsk began to embroider and which is to become a symbol of unification of Ukraine, was sent on August 30 from the Sviatohirska Monastery of the Holy Assumption in Donetsk Oblast on a tour of the country.

The first part of the embroidered pattern is small, about 60 centimeters long, but it will be continued during the tour of the country’s regions. The organizers hope that the cloth will reach half a kilometer in length by the end of the trip.

According to experts, the pattern embroidered by the monks represents an ornament typical of Slobidska Ukraine, namely, a cross covered with roses, poppies and bluets, which is also the symbol of the Sviatohirska Monastery of the Holy Assumption.

According to the manager of the project “One Ukraine, East and West Together,” Svitlana Kucherenko, in September the work on the cloth will be continued in various towns of Donetsk Oblast and in October it will be sent to Lviv.

According to the authors of the project, by August 24, 2011, the length of the embroidered cloth will reach 500 meters. It will be registered as the longest rushnyk of Ukraine and included in the National Book of Records.
