Occupiers plan to “remodel” the Mariupol church listed in the Book of Records of Ukraine
This was reported by the Mariupol City Council.
The church is the only one in the world fully decorated in Petrykivka style (Petrykivka painting), which is why it was included in the Book of Records of Ukraine.
However, now, on the instructions of the occupiers, its appearance is to be altered in accordance with the “canons of the Russian Orthodox Church.”
The "renovations" will be undertaken by a group of "Orthodox volunteers."
Before the war, the church, located in the Prymorskyi district, was restored by volunteers thanks to donations from patrons.
The Petrykivka murals were painted by Lviv artist Olha Cheriomushkina.
In 2022, during the siege of Mariupol, the church became a refuge for civilians, but after the city was captured, the Russian Orthodox Church commission declared that the decor did not meet the requirements.
