On December 13, in Ivano-Frankivsk, the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Patriarch Sviatoslav (Shevchuk), proclaimed the establishment of the Ivano-Frankivsk Metropolitanate of UGCC and enthroned Bishop Volodymyr (Viytyshyn) as its first metropolitan.
According to the Information Department of UGCC, the metropolitan assumed the powers and responsibilities stipulated by Canons 131-139 of the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches. He will convene the Metropolitan Synod to regulate the questions of the activity of the church in a certain territory, will have a right to consecrate and enthrone bishops of his metropolitanate, ensure the strict observance of the faith, conduct canonical visitations and will establish the metropolitan tribunal.
The newly established Ivano-Frankivsk Metropolitanate includes the Ivano-Frankivsk Archeparchy and Kolomyia-Chernivtsi Eparchy. The Cathedral of Christ’s Resurrection in Ivano-Frankivsk is the main cathedral of the metropolitanate.
