Patriarch Sviatoslav Shevchuk to visit Ukrainian parish in Dublin while in Ireland for International Eucharistic Congress

"The Eucharist: Communion with Christ and one another " is the main theme of the 50th International Eucharistic Congress, which is being held June 10-17 in Dublin, Ireland. According to Vatican Radio, the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) Patriarch Sviatoslav Shevchuk is to take part in the congress. 

While in Dublin for the congress, Patriarch Sviatoslav will visit the Ukrainian parish in Dublin. 

The history of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Ireland is connected with Bishop Mykolai Charnetskyi, CSSR, who in 1931 went there to take part in the International Eucharistic Congress, held in 1932. During his trip he visited not only the capital of Ireland but also the monastery of the Redemptorists in Limerick, where there is now an icon of Blessed Mykolai with the inscription: "In 1931 blessed Mykolai Charnetskyi visited this church."

The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Ireland has existed since 1997, which is when many Ukrainians (particularly from Western Ukraine) started to go there to work. Seeing the spiritual need, now deceased Fr. Serhii Kelleher (who was of Irish descent) began to minister for the Ukrainian community in Dublin. Today the UGCC has one parish in Dublin, the heavenly patron of which is blessed Mykolai Charnetskyi.
