Pope sends special message to participants of the World Economic Forum - фото 1
On the occasion of the World Economic Forum, which is taking place in Davos from January 20 to 24 with the theme “Cooperation for the Intelligent Age,” Pope Francis sent a special message to its participants. In the message, he shared his thoughts on the role of artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool for bringing peoples closer together.

This was reported by Vatican News.

His Holiness emphasizes that Christian tradition regards the gift of intelligence as an integral aspect of the human person created "in the image and likeness of God". The Catholic Church supports the advancements of science and technology, considering them a way to perfect the visible creation in collaboration with God. At the same time, as artificial intelligence is intended to imitate the human mind, it poses a unique set of questions and challenges for society.

The Pope notes that AI is able to generate results that are virtually indistinguishable from human ones and create new artifacts that surpass the capabilities of humans: all this exacerbates the “crisis of truth” in public space. In addition, by learning from human performance, AI makes autonomous decisions and adapts to new situations, which raises important questions about ethical responsibility, security, and the consequences for society.

The Pope emphasizes that the use of the term “intelligence” in relation to AI is incorrect, as this tool is a product of the human mind, not a replacement for it. The proper use of AI helps people to realize their vocation, promoting freedom and responsibility. It is important to remember that new technologies should always serve the good of man, creating a more just and humane society.

The Bishop of Rome notes that in order to advance the technocratic paradigm, “human dignity and fraternity are frequently subordinated in the pursuit of efficiency.” AI should promote healthier social and holistic development, not deepen inequality and conflict.

The Pope calls on governments and business corporations to carefully evaluate the use of artificial intelligence to determine whether it promotes human dignity and the common good. Since the consequences of AI cannot always be predicted, it is necessary to realize the shared responsibility for the common home and the well-being of society.

Pope Francis concluded his message by offering his prayerful good wishes for the deliberations of the Forum and invoking divine blessings upon all its participants.
