Poroshenko transfers to UGCC monastery complex in Ternopil
President Petro Poroshenko handed over to the Ternopil-Zboriv Archeparchy of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church a certificate for a complex of cells of the Monastery of the Dominican Fathers which was nationalized by the communist authorities. This was reported by Ukrinform.
“Today, before our eyes, historical justice is restored. We transfer to the use of the Ternopil-Zboriv Archeparchy of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church a complex of cells of the monastery of the Dominican Fathers which once was nationalized by the communist government,” said Poroshenko.
“I am very grateful to the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church of Ukraine for constant prayers for Ukraine, for God's help, for missionary and chaplaincy activities," the President emphasized.
The head of state also took part in the prayer service for peace in Ukraine at the Archbishopric Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the UGCC in Ternopil.
The premises of the cells of the Dominican monastery in conjunction with the church (now the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin of the UGCC) are part of a single architectural complex built throughout 1749-1799. Since October 1939, the State Archive of the Ternopil Oblast had been located in the monastery's cellar.
In June 1993, a decision was made to return the premises of the church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin to the property of the UGCC and the premises of the former monastery, provided that this will be done after the completion of the construction of a new building of the state archive.
In March 2019, the Oblast State Archive completed its major work on the transportation of its funds into a new building.
