On Friday, August 25, 2023, Pope Francis received the President of Hungary, Katalin Novák, in an audience at the Vatican.

As reported by Vatican News, the conversation with the Pope lasted approximately 50 minutes.

The meeting concluded with an exchange of gifts. Pope Francis presented a special edition of pontificate documents, this year's message of peace, an illustrated edition of "Statio Orbis" – his prayer in the empty St. Peter's Square during the COVID-19 pandemic, and a bronze sculpture titled "Be Messengers of Peace."

In return, the President of Hungary brought a gift set and an icon of the Virgin Mary from the Transcarpathian region, where the Hungarian minority resides, to the Holy Father.

Later, Katalin Novák met with the Vatican's Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

During the discussions, both sides recalled this year's Apostolic journey to Budapest and delved into matters of family and Christian values. Continuing the conversation, the participants addressed the topic of the war in Ukraine, particularly emphasizing the humanitarian situation and efforts towards ending the conflict. The discussion concluded with a focus on religious freedom and the status of persecuted Christians around the world.
