The Hierarchical Council of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) on May 11 addressed a letter to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, sharply condemning the ideology of the "Russian World" and the criminal actions of Vladimir Putin and the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC).

The OCU Hierarchical Council stated that Putin, through his crimes, has excommunicated himself from the Church.

The letter from the OCU states:

"Considering the general Orthodox Christian teaching on unrepentant mortal sins, which sever a person from God and the Church, and taking into account the particular gravity, public nature, and stubborn unrepentance of the crimes against God, the Church of Christ, and humanity committed by the layman of the ROC, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, the Hierarchical Council of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine testifies that this person, through his crimes and stubborn and conscious unrepentance in public sins, has excommunicated himself from the Church.

Regarding him, it can be said in the words of Psalm 108: 'Let his days be few and let another take his office... He loved cursing, and it came to him; he did not delight in blessing, so it was far from him. He clothed himself with cursing as with his garment, and it seeped into his body like water, into his bones like oil. May it be like a garment wrapped around him, like a belt he always wears' (Psalm 108: 8, 17-19). May God's righteous judgment soon be fulfilled on him, of whom it can be said in the words of the Gospel, 'his father is the devil' (John 8: 44)."
