While congratulating the Buddhists of Russia on the New Year, which was celebrated on March 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin thanked them for supporting the participants of the special military operation.

This was reported by the Telegram channel Christians Against War.

“It is gratifying that today the Buddhists of Russia, Buddhist organizations are actively involved in the country's life, make a significant contribution to improving interreligious and interethnic relations, strengthening a fruitful dialogue with the state authorities, and support the participants of the special military operation and their families.”

It should be noted that not all Russian Buddhists support the war against Ukraine.

For instance, due to the condemnation of the “SVO”, the former Buddhist lama of Kalmykia, Telo Tulku Rinpoche, was declared a foreign agent, deprived of his position and residence permit. Since the summer of 2024, the rector of the Moscow Zen Center, Ilya Vasiliev, has been held in the pre-trial detention center. Dmitry Vasilets, a senior lieutenant from the Murmansk region who converted to Buddhism at the front, was convicted of disobeying an order.
