Religious Figures of Crimea Called Yanukovych to Support Construction of Mosque
Members of the Interconfessional Crimean Council "Peace is a Gift of God" addressed Ukraine's president with a request to assist in the construction of the central mosque in Simferopol.
"We ask to support the initiative of the Crimean Muslims so that every group of people living in our blessed land may be able to realize its constitutional right to construct religious buildings and offer prayers in them," reads the address as www.e-crimea.info reports.
The document says that in 2004, the council addressed the authorities with the request to allow the construction of the central Mosque.
Information:
In July 2004, the Simferopol City Council allocated to the Spiritual Board of Muslims a plot of 2.7 hectares on Yaltynska Street and issued a permit for the construction of the central Mosque. However, in January 2008, at the session of the Simferopol City Council a decision was passed to allocate for the mosque a plot of 2.7 hectares at Luhova Street instead of the plot at Yaltynska Street. In February, the Crimean Tatars launched a project of gathering stones for the construction.
