The Kremlin has dismissed the suggestion of a Christmas truce, fearing it would give Ukraine the opportunity to "prepare for the continuation of the war," according to Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for the Russian president, speaking to local media.

This was reported by Radio Liberty.

Peskov expressed Russia's stance on the situation, emphasizing its clarity and consistency, which he believes is well-understood by both the Americans and the Ukrainian side.

He stated, "We want peace; we are not seeking a truce that would do nothing but allow Ukraine to regroup and continue the conflict. Our goal is to cease this war, achieve our objectives, safeguard our interests, and ensure lasting peace in Europe."

During a visit to Germany on December 14 and 15, President Zelensky engaged in discussions in Berlin with a Ukrainian delegation, U.S. Special Representative Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of the U.S. President.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz suggested that Russia initiate a truce for Christmas, positing that this could serve as the foundation for "constructive, sober negotiations" aimed at achieving lasting peace in Ukraine.

As reported by Ukrainska Pravda, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his support for Merz's idea. He confirmed that it has been officially recognized during discussions, with the support of the United States. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine is open to any truce, including an energy truce, but the outcome relies heavily on Russia's political will.
