UGCC Synod Announces the Creation of Two New Exarchates for Ukraine

Lviv, Ukraine, 6 July 2001: His Beatitude Lubomyr Cardinal Husar, Major Archbishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church announced that the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church Synod of Bishops created two new Exarchates (Administrative Regions) for Eastern Ukraine. The additional two new Exarchates will be named: Donetz and Odessa-Crimea. The two new Exarchates were created from the territory of the Kyiv-Vyshhorod Exarchate, created in 1996.
Exarchs (heads of the Exarchates) have not been named yet. “We hope to be able to name the Exarchs in the very near future. Our Bishops have created these two Exarchates to further assist in the pastoral care of our faithful in Eastern Ukraine,” His Beatitude Lubomyr said. Thirty-one Bishops from Ukraine and abroad participated in the five day Synod which was convened on Sunday 1 July at Divine Liturgy celebrated at Saint George’s Ukrainian Greek Catholic Cathedral in Lviv.
