Weigel: American Catholics are starting to realize they made the wrong choice
This was reported by CREDO, citing an interview with George Weigel conducted by the newspaper La Repubblica.
The Italian publication highlights that George Weigel, along with Michael Novak and Richard John Neuhaus, was one of three American intellectuals who served as a guiding light in the United States during the pontificates of Pope John Paul II and, later, Pope Benedict XVI.
Weigel responded to the White House's attack against Pope Leo, stating, “President Trump’s posts on Truth are outrageous, scandalous, and offensive. The Pope’s reaction during his flight to Africa demonstrates how a mature person should handle such nonsense. This situation arose because Trump is completely undisciplined and lacks individuals around him who could protect him from his worst instincts. This issue is indicative of a broader problem that affects everything, not just the disrespectful message he decided to post about the Pope.”
According to George Weigel, the faithful are excited about Leo’s election, even though he has spent nearly his entire adult life abroad, primarily in Latin America and Rome. Weigel argues that it's not merely Chicago that has taken the Chair of Peter; rather, this international experience enhances his authority as a Pope, who inherently has a global mission.
When asked how Trump’s remarks about Pope Leo might affect the midterm elections in November, George Weigel replied, “I hope this incident teaches Catholics who support Trump that voting for a narcissist is never a good idea. All presidents possess a strong ego, but narcissism is a serious flaw for someone meant to lead a country.”
George Weigel chose not to comment on the photo of Trump dressed as Jesus, stating, “It seems to me that this is a gesture that speaks for itself.”
