Jan Purvinsky, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine, passed away

On April 6, 2021, at 2:00, Bishop Jan Purvinsky passed away to the Lord at the age of 86.

This was announced by Bishop Vitaly Kryvysky of the Diocese of Kyiv and Zhytomyr of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine.

"Thanks to all those who supported the Pastor in prayer, especially in these last days, I ask you to continue to pray to the Merciful Father to fold him into His parental embrace. The date of the funeral will be announced later," he wrote on Facebook.

Jan Purvinsky was born on November 19, 1934, in the village of Dolna (Latvia) in a Polish family. He was ordained to the priesthood on April 13, 1961, in Riga, and ordained a bishop on March 4, 1991, in Zhytomyr.

On November 25, 1998, he was appointed bishop-ordinary of the Diocese of Kyiv and Zhytomyr.

On November 5, 2008, he was appointed Chairman of the Commission of clergy and priestly vocations.

On June 15, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI accepted the resignation of Bishop Jan Purvinsky, from the post of ordinary of the Diocese of Kyiv-Zhytomyr of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine, due to reaching retirement age.
