On the eve of the conclave, which begins today, May 7, the cardinals of the Catholic Church called for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and other countries.

This was reported by the UGGC Department for Information with reference to the press service of the Holy See.

In their address, the cardinals noted "with regret" that no progress has been made in promoting peace processes. “On the contrary”, reads the statement, “attacks — especially those harming the civilian population — have intensified”.

"We, the cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, gathered in general congregation before the beginning of the Conclave, note with regret that there has been no progress in advancing peace processes in Ukraine, the Middle East, and many other regions of the world. On the contrary, attacks have intensified, particularly against civilians. Therefore, we make a heartfelt appeal to all parties involved to reach, as soon as possible, a permanent ceasefire and to negotiate, without preconditions and further delays, the peace so deeply desired by the affected populations and by the entire world," the statement reads.

With this in mind, the cardinals invite the faithful to “intensify their supplication to the Lord for a just and lasting peace”.
