On May 16, the Vatican announced that Pope Leo XIV had approved the creation of an interdepartmental commission on artificial intelligence. This commission was founded by Cardinal Michael Czerny, the Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, in accordance with Article 28, §5 of the Apostolic Constitution "Praedicate Evangelium."

This was reported by Vatican Radio.

As noted in the document signed by Cardinal Michael Czerny, the establishment of this commission arises from several key factors: the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) and its increasing prevalence in recent years; the potential impact of AI on individuals and humanity as a whole; and the Church’s concern for the dignity of every person, particularly regarding their holistic development.

The interdepartmental commission will include representatives from various departments responsible for integral human development, doctrine, culture, education, and communication. Additionally, members from the Pontifical Academy for Life, the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, and the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences will participate. The commission’s work will center around these areas.

The document states that any changes to the commission’s membership must be submitted to His Holiness for approval. The appointment of a representative from each listed institution will be under the authority of the respective department heads.

Furthermore, the coordination of the commission's work will initially be entrusted to the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development for a period of one year, with the possibility of renewal. After this initial term, the Pope will assign coordination to one of the participating institutions for another year.
