Pope Leo XIV expressed concern about the "significant escalation" of Russia's war in Ukraine.

This was reported by Radio Svoboda.

"I am following with concern the war in Ukraine, which has intensified significantly in recent days. I wish to express my solidarity with all those suffering as a result of the recent attacks, which have also targeted civilians," the Pope said on May 27 during his weekly audience at the Vatican.

"War does not solve problems; it exacerbates them. It does not build security; it multiplies suffering and hatred. Where missiles and drones fall, hopes are crushed, homes and places of worship are destroyed, and innocent lives are cut short," added Pope Leo XIV.

On May 25, Russia urged the United States to evacuate its diplomatic mission and warned of impending systematic strikes on Kyiv. Other countries received similar warnings.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his "deep concern" over Russia's statement.
