“Yesterday, about 5 p.m. we noticed black marks on the cross. Upon closer examination, we saw that words in Hebrew were painted in black on the white crucifix. Since we do not know the translation of the words, we called the police to have them check whether it is a desecration of an Orthodox cross. Currently we are looking for a translator to translate for us the content written on the cross,” said Sergey Alekseyev, member of the Council of Civil society organizations Uman.

From an unofficially source, it was learned that the words in Hebrew mean “Stop angering God.”

In June the Council of Civil Organization of Uman installed the crucifix near the pond by the factory Mehometr. The cross was made in honor of the anniversary of the baptism of Rus.

Opposite the lake is located a synagogue of the Hasidim, who annually come to Uman to celebrate the Jewish New Year. Recently, the Hasidic community requested that the city government transfer the Orthodox shrine to avoid provocations between the Hasidim and Ukrainians.

As was reported, this year nearly 25,000 pilgrims are expected to visit Uman. During the pilgrimage, more than 400 policemen will be maintaining public order.
