Holocaust Monument in Nikopol Desecrated
In Nikopol on August 12 the Holocaust Monument, located at the entrance to the city, was desecrated. A Nazi swastika was painted in black over the monument’s white six-pointed star, chairman of the Jewish community in Nikopol, Alexander Taratuta, informed the website of the Dnipropetrovsk Jewish community.
The eyewitness immediately notified the city police department and security services about the incident.
“The Jewish community is very alarmed by this incident, we are waiting for the reaction of law enforcement services and the corresponding punishment,” said the executive director of the Jewish community in Nikopol.
According to the site of Dnipropetrovsk Jewish community, after receiving this information, a professional photographer was sent the place of the desecration. However, by this time the traces of black paint had been thoroughly wiped (presumably by a cleaning solution).
The monument, which commemorates the Nikopol Jews who were killed by the Nazis, was unveiled on November 25, 2001. The opening ceremony was attended by representatives of the Nikopol community and delegations from many cities and countries, as well as by government officials.
