Pope: I pray for those suffering in Ukraine, and renew my call for an end to violence
This was reported by Vatican Radio.
"In Ukraine, renewed and particularly heavy shelling — mainly targeting energy infrastructure — has intensified as the cold weather becomes harsher, seriously affecting the civilian population. I pray for those who are suffering and once again call for an end to the violence and for increased efforts to achieve peace," said Pope Leo XIV after reciting the Angelus prayer on Sunday, January 11, 2026.
On this occasion, the pontiff spoke about the situation in the Middle East. “My thoughts,” he expressed, “are with those affected by the ongoing conflicts in the region, especially in Iran and Syria, where prolonged tensions are leading to the loss of many lives. I hope and pray that dialogue and peace are actively pursued to benefit the common good of all society.”
