On Sunday, May 18, 2025, Pope Leo XIV celebrated the Mass of Inauguration of his Petrine Ministry in Saint Peter’s Square in the Vatican. The service ended with the recitation of the Hail Mary.

This was reported by Vatican News.

The Holy Father expressed his gratitude to everyone who traveled to Rome from various parts of the world. In his first speech following his inauguration, the pontiff also addressed the situation in Ukraine.

"I extend my special thanks to the official delegations from many countries, as well as to the representatives of different Churches, ecclesial communities, and other religions. I warmly welcome the thousands of pilgrims who have journeyed from all continents to celebrate the Jubilee of the fraternities. Beloved, I appreciate your efforts in preserving the rich heritage of popular piety!" the Pope said, adding that during the Holy Mass, he felt the presence of Pope Francis, "who accompanies us from heaven."

"In the joy of faith and communion, we cannot forget our brothers and sisters who are suffering due to war. In Gaza, children, families, and the elderly are enduring hunger. In Myanmar, new conflicts have claimed the lives of innocent young people. The martyred Ukraine is awaiting the start of negotiations for a just and lasting peace," the Holy Father stated.

In conclusion, the Pope entrusted the ministry of the Bishop of Rome, the Shepherd of the Universal Church, to the Blessed Virgin Mary, encouraging everyone to look to her as a sign of hope and the Mother of Good Counsel. “Through her intercession, let us pray for the gift of peace, support, and consolation for those who suffer, and for grace for all of us to be witnesses of the Risen Lord,” he urged.

After the Mass, Pope Leo XIV received greetings from official delegations and will later have a separate meeting with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.
